The Origins of 420

The term 420 (or 4:20 or 4/20) is widely used as a slang term when used to share a time to consume cannabis with others or the date for cannabis celebrations. The true origins of 420 are somewhat mysterious, but one thing is clear. This phrase has identified with cannabis culture and has been a part of the cannabis lifestyle for decades.

Almost half a century!

One popular story of the days origins traces back to a group of high school students at San Rafael High School in Northern California back in the early 1970s known as the "Waldos.

4:20 is the time some cannabis comsumers stop what they're doing and spark up.

According to the story, the students would meet up after school was dismissed for the day and smoke weed at 4:20 p.m. together. They would use the term 420 as "code" to remind each other of the meeting time.

From there, it spread through pop culture and became a symbol of cannabis use and counterculture. Not just the day but for some people the time of when to smoke.

April 20th (4/20) is also celebrated by many cannabis enthusiasts as a sort of unofficial holiday, with events and gatherings often taking place on this date.

Although, the actual number “420” doesn’t have much significance, this phrase was soon adopted so that young people could discuss cannabis consumption without worrying that their parents or teachers would overhear them.

Public opinion and policy surrounding cannabis was harsh in the 1970s, so advocates and users alike needed to tread carefully.

One funny and less common theory suggests that the term “420” originated from a police code that was allegedly used to signify cannabis-related offenses. However, there is little evidence available to support this claim and it is largely considered a myth.
